Why a Car Unlocks Krabi
Krabi's mainland attractions sit far apart, and most have no public transport at all. The inland nature reserves around Khlong Thom are 60 to 75 km from Ao Nang, the northern beaches need their own access roads, and group tours run to fixed schedules with per-person pricing. A car turns three separate paid excursions into one flexible day, which is why so many families compare cars before they arrive.
A key expectation to set: a car reaches the temples, waterfalls, pools and northern beaches, but Krabi's islands and the Railay peninsula are boat-only. Pair the car with pre-booked boat tours from the piers.
Tiger Cave Temple and Krabi Town
The Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) sits about 9 km from Krabi Town and 20 to 23 km from Ao Nang, on a sealed road with a large free car park. Entry is free, with donations welcomed, and the reward is a 1,260-step climb to a golden Buddha and a 360-degree view over the karst plains. Go early to beat the heat, and watch for monkeys near the steps.
Krabi Town itself, the provincial capital about 20 to 30 minutes from Ao Nang, is cheaper and more local than the resort strip. The white Wat Kaew Korawaram temple rises above it, the riverfront promenade has the landmark mud-crab sculptures, and the weekend Walking Street night market serves southern Thai street food. Parking is free near the markets and under the Vogue mall.
Krabi Town pairs naturally with the Tiger Cave Temple on one half-day loop, with the car letting you arrive before the tour vans and leave when you choose.
Inland Nature: Emerald Pool and Hot Springs
The Khlong Thom district, 65 to 75 km from Ao Nang on paved roads, holds Krabi's signature inland sites. The Emerald Pool (Sa Morakot) is a swimmable turquoise mineral pool reached by a boardwalk through lowland jungle, with the viewing-only Blue Pool further along the trail. A 15-minute drive away, the Krabi Hot Springs cascade into natural stone basins at a soothing 35 to 42 degrees Celsius — limit a soak to about 20 minutes. Both pair easily on one inland day, and the rugged Huay To waterfall in Khao Phanom Bencha National Park adds a third stop for hikers.
| Site | From Ao Nang | Foreigner Entry (verify at gate) |
|---|---|---|
| Emerald Pool & Blue Pool | 65-75 km | 200-400 THB adult |
| Krabi Hot Springs | 64-70 km | around 200 THB adult |
| Khao Phanom Bencha (Huay To) | 35-47 km | 100-200 THB adult |
Thailand applies dual-tier pricing at national parks, so foreigners pay markedly more than Thai nationals and figures shift between seasons — budget for the higher rate and carry cash, as card machines are rare at the gates. Car parking is a nominal 30 THB.
Northern Beaches and the Piers
North of Ao Nang, the quiet beaches of Klong Muang and Tubkaek face west for sunsets over the offshore karsts and host the province's luxury resorts. They are 11 to 22 km from Ao Nang on narrower, less-lit coastal roads, with few amenities — exactly the kind of isolated base where a car is essential rather than optional. The steep Dragon Crest (Khao Ngon Nak) trail at Tubkaek rewards fit hikers with a famous rock-ledge viewpoint.
For island trips, the Nopparat Thara and Ao Nang piers are where the road ends and the boats begin. Park near the pier, then board a longtail or ferry — cars and scooters cannot go on the boats. Having your own vehicle is a real advantage for early-morning departures from these piers, and for the quieter stays covered on our Ao Nang car rental page.
Nearby Drives: Ko Lanta, Phuket and Khao Sok
With a few days you can use Krabi as a launchpad for the wider Andaman coast. The drives below all start on Highway 4, the southern spine, and reward an SUV for comfort over the longer legs.
| Drive | Distance / Time | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Ko Lanta | 99 km, 2-3 hours | Karst islands; needs the Hua Hin car ferry |
| Phuket | 165 km, 2.5-3 hours | Fully drivable via the Sarasin Bridge |
| Khao Sok National Park | 145 km, 2.5 hours | Rainforest and Cheow Lan Lake |
| Phang Nga Bay | 80 km, 1 hr 15 | Piers for James Bond Island |
Ko Lanta is not yet a ferry-free drive: the Siri Lanta Bridge only joins the two Lanta islands, while the mainland crossing from Ban Hua Hin Pier remains a short car ferry with peak-season queues. The mainland bridge has been promised but is not built.
Boat-Only: What You Cannot Drive To
Some of Krabi's most famous names never connect to the road. The drive ends at the pier, where you switch to a longtail, speedboat or ferry for the final leg.
- Railay and Tonsai: a cliff-locked peninsula, 10-15 minutes by longtail from Ao Nang or Ao Nam Mao.
- Phi Phi Islands: about 40 km offshore, ferry from Klong Jilad or Nopparat Thara pier.
- Hong Islands: tours from Nopparat Thara, Tubkaek or Ao Thalane.
- Ko Poda, Chicken Island and Bamboo Island: the 4-Islands snorkelling circuit, all boat-only.
Plan these as park-and-ride days: drive to the pier, leave the car in the lot, and let the boat handle the rest. Our driving in Krabi guide details the pier parking, while the Krabi airport car rental page covers collecting a car for these trips.
