Why Rent a Car in Krabi

Krabi is a mainland province on Thailand's Andaman coast, not a compact island like Phuket. Its attractions are spread out: Krabi International Airport sits about 15 km from Krabi Town and 26 to 30 km from Ao Nang, while the Emerald Pool and hot springs lie 65 to 75 km inland. There is no scheduled bus network to the inland sights, and shared songthaews stop running after dark.

Because of that spread, a car pays for itself quickly. A family making one airport run and a single inland day trip already spends more on taxis and tours than an economy car costs for the day, and you keep the freedom to explore Krabi attractions by car without booking a guide.

Note that Bolt, Uber and Lyft do not operate in Krabi, so a rental car removes any reliance on a thin ride-hailing supply. When you are ready, compare cars to lock in a rate.

Getting From Krabi Airport (KBV)

Krabi International Airport (KBV) sits directly on Highway 4, the main southern artery, and is rapidly adding Gulf and European links such as Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and seasonal charters from Prague. Car rental desks for Sixt, Budget, Europcar, Drive Car Rental and Thai Rent A Car line the Terminal 1 arrivals hall, with several local operators meeting you near the exit.

Krabi Town13-15 km15-20 minutes
Ao Nang26-30 km35-45 minutes
Klong Muang / Tubkaek32-38 km45-55 minutes

The quickest route to Ao Nang stays on Highway 4 west, then turns onto Highway 4034 at the Shell station by Klong Jilad, bypassing the congestion in central Krabi Town. Full terminal pickup details are in our Krabi Airport car rental guide.

Local Operators vs International Desks

The Krabi market splits cleanly in two. International chains hold the airport desks and place a credit-card pre-authorisation, typically 5,000 THB for an economy car and up to 20,000 THB for an SUV. Reputable local operators deliver to your Ao Nang hotel, include first-class insurance, and accept a modest cash deposit instead of a card.

  • Pure Krabi: Ao Nang based since 2015, free delivery, 5,000 THB cash deposit, copy of your passport only.
  • Krabi Cars: operating since 2018, full-to-full fuel policy, free hotel and airport delivery.
  • Krabi Car 4 Rent: nine years in the market, unlimited mileage and free one-way airport delivery.
  • Krabi Green Day and TN Rent a Car: eco cars and MPVs with first-class insurance and cash-deposit options.

Pickup pointKBV airport desksHotel or airport delivery
Deposit5,000-20,000 THB on credit cardUsually 3,000-5,000 THB cash
TermsStandardised, strictFlexible, no credit card needed

The local cash-deposit model is genuinely common in Krabi, but it shifts risk to you. Photograph the car at handover, get the deposit and fuel terms in writing, and never let an operator keep your physical passport — a copy is normal, surrendering the original is a red flag.

Seasonal Pricing & When to Book

Krabi runs a sharp two-season market. The dry high season from November to April draws Scandinavian, German and Russian winter visitors, tightening fleets and lifting prices; February is usually the dearest month. The green monsoon season from May to October cuts rates by roughly 25 to 35 percent.

Vehicle ClassLow Season (May-Oct)High Season (Nov-Apr)
Economy auto (Toyota Yaris / Honda City)500-900 THB900-1,400 THB
Sedan (Toyota Vios / Corolla Altis)900-1,300 THB1,400-2,000 THB
Large SUV (Toyota Fortuner / Isuzu MU-X)1,500-2,200 THB2,400-3,400 THB

Book several weeks ahead for the peak micro-windows: Christmas and New Year, Chinese New Year in late January or February, and Songkran in mid-April. Walk-up airport availability falls close to zero during these periods. Local firms staying in Ao Nang often match or undercut the airport chains.

What a Car Cannot Reach: Boat-Only Krabi

Krabi's most photographed places are cut off from the road network by sheer limestone cliffs and open sea. A rental car is the ideal way to reach the departure piers — Nopparat Thara, Ao Nam Mao and Klong Jilad — but it cannot take you onto the islands or to Railay. Plan to park and ride a longtail for the final hop.

  • Railay Beach and Tonsai: walled off by cliffs, reached only by a 10-15 minute longtail from Ao Nang or Ao Nam Mao.
  • Phi Phi Islands: about 40 km offshore, ferry or speedboat from Klong Jilad or Nopparat Thara.
  • Hong Islands, Ko Poda, Chicken Island and Bamboo Island: the classic 4-Islands snorkelling stops, all boat-only.

Satellite map apps often try to route drivers toward Railay and dead-end on a dirt track at Ao Nam Mao. Treat the pier as your destination, then book a boat. Our driving in Krabi guide covers the pier parking in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does car rental cost in Krabi?
Roughly 900 to 1,400 THB per day for an economy automatic in the high season and 2,400 to 3,400 THB for a large SUV, dropping about 25 to 35 percent in the May to October green season. Fuel is Gasohol 95 at around 43 THB per litre on a full-to-full policy with unlimited mileage.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Thailand?
Yes. Thai law requires an International Driving Permit carried with your home licence and passport. Police run document checkpoints on Highway 4 and around Ao Nang, fines run 500 to 1,000 THB, and driving without an IDP can void your insurance after an accident. See our full FAQ for licence details.
Can you drive to Railay Beach?
No. Railay is a peninsula sealed off by limestone cliffs with no road. Park at Ao Nang or Ao Nam Mao and take a longtail boat, about 100 to 150 THB and 10 to 15 minutes.
Can you drive from Krabi to Ko Lanta or Phuket?
Phuket is fully drivable, about 2.5 to 3 hours via Highway 4 and the toll-free Sarasin Bridge. Ko Lanta is reachable but not ferry-free: you take a short car ferry from Ban Hua Hin Pier to Lanta Noi, then the Siri Lanta Bridge to Lanta Yai, as the mainland bridge is not yet built.
Is it hard to drive on the left in Krabi?
It takes a little adjustment, but Krabi traffic is far lighter than Bangkok or Phuket and the terrain is mostly flat coastal highway. Cars are right-hand drive and almost always automatic; take the first hour slowly and watch for scooters undertaking on your left.
What deposit and insurance should I expect?
International chains hold 5,000 to 20,000 THB on a credit card; good local firms take a 3,000 to 5,000 THB cash deposit. Take the Collision Damage Waiver, check the excess, and consider Super CDW at 200 to 400 THB per day to cut it toward zero. Minimum age is usually 21.
