Ao Nang Car Rental — Krabi's Beach-Resort Base

Ao Nang is Krabi's main beach town and island-trip launchpad, about 30 km from the airport. Its strip is walkable, but a rental car earns its keep the moment you head for the inland sights and northern beaches.

Ao Nang: Krabi's Beach-Resort Base

Ao Nang is the heart of Krabi's tourism: a beach-road strip of hotels, restaurants, dive shops and tour agencies, with island boats leaving from the adjacent Ao Nang and Nopparat Thara piers. It is the launch point for Railay, Phi Phi and the 4-Islands tour, and the most convenient base for first-time visitors.

  • Ao Nang: the lively, purpose-built resort strip — most hotels, dining and direct boat access.
  • Krabi Town: the provincial capital 20-30 minutes east, cheaper and more local, with riverfront night markets.
  • Klong Muang & Tubkaek: quiet luxury beaches 11-22 km north, secluded with few amenities.

Do You Need a Car in Ao Nang?

It depends entirely on your plans. Inside the dense beach-road core a car is a liability — parking is scarce, traffic is slow, and everything is walkable. The car earns its keep for what lies outside the strip: the inland nature sites, the northern beaches, airport runs with luggage, and the drives to Phuket or Ko Lanta.

If your itinerary is built around the inland sights in our Krabi attractions by car guide, the car becomes the cheapest and most flexible option. For a pure beach-and-boats break, lean on the shuttle and longtails instead.

Renting and Collecting in Ao Nang

Most Ao Nang rentals come from local operators who deliver the car to your hotel rather than from an airport desk. They typically include first-class insurance, accept a cash deposit instead of a credit-card hold, and complete the paperwork in your lobby. Pure Krabi, for example, is Ao Nang based, advertises a year-round Toyota Yaris rate from around 850 THB, takes a refundable 5,000 THB cash deposit and only keeps a copy of your passport.

The cash-deposit model is convenient, but protect yourself: film a timestamped walkaround at handover focusing on wheels, bumpers and the windscreen, get the deposit and fuel terms in writing, and never surrender your physical passport — a copy is normal, the original is not.

Bring your passport, home licence and an International Driving Permit; you will need all three for the rental and at any police checkpoint, as explained on our driving in Krabi guide.

Parking and Getting Around Ao Nang

Parking on the Ao Nang beachfront is genuinely tight, with no-parking signs along much of the strip and spaces gone by early morning in high season. The easiest free option is the large car park by the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market, opposite Nopparat Thara Beach, within walking distance of the strip and the pier.

Around town, scooters dominate and pedestrians step out expecting traffic to stop, so keep speeds low and check your left mirror constantly. For island days, drive to the Nopparat Thara pier, park in the lot, and ride a longtail — vehicles cannot board the boats.

Watch the curb colours: red and white means no stopping and a clamp with a 500 THB-plus release fee. When in doubt, use the night-market lot or your hotel's parking rather than the beach road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is parking easy in Ao Nang?
Not on the beachfront, which is tight and signed no-parking along much of the strip. The free car park by the Ao Nang Landmark Night Market near Nopparat Thara is the easiest option, and most hotels have their own parking.
Can a rental company deliver a car to my Ao Nang hotel?
Yes. Most local Ao Nang operators deliver free to hotels and complete the paperwork in your lobby, often including first-class insurance and a cash-deposit option. Confirm the delivery area, as the far northern beaches can carry a small surcharge.
Should I base in Ao Nang or Krabi Town for a car trip?
Ao Nang is more convenient for beaches, boat piers and the widest hotel choice, while Krabi Town is cheaper and more local. Both are a short drive from the airport and the inland sights, so either works well with a rental car.
Can you drive from Ao Nang to Railay Beach?
No. Railay is cut off by limestone cliffs with no road; take a longtail from Ao Nang beach or Ao Nam Mao pier, about 100 to 150 THB and 10 to 15 minutes. Leave the car in the lot and ride the boat.
